I went to the Acoustic Neuroma group on Facebook to see what they were talking about today. Someone was wondering how to deal with claustrophobia during the MRIs and with radiation when you have a mask that is bolted down.
This is one of my problems, so I replied with my solutions. They may not work for everyone, but they got me thru the MRIs and then the Cyberknife treatment with a mask bolted to the table.
I didn’t see much difference between open and closed MRI machines. When I heard the pictures are better with the closed, I tried it. Valium (diazepam) helped me. I had a tea towel over my eyes. I told the techs my problem and asked them to talk to me as much as they could. They were especially helpful for the MRIs when I heard things like, “two minutes this time,” and “you are doing great, “we are almost done – just a couple more.” When I knew it was 45 seconds, for example, I counted the seconds.
Also, they can play music – yours or someone else. If silence is better for you, earplugs might help. If allowed, have a friend or relative hold your hand. I thought of special Bible verses and hymns. I prayed. A warm blanket can be very comforting. Any blanket, warm or cold, can be comforting.
The doctor can prescribe a sedative that puts you to sleep if necessary. Deep, slow, and controlled breathing can help, too.

Dear God,
You know all my fears and claustrophobia in an MRI machine is a big one. With you beside me, I can get through this. Please help the technician to help me. Please help the radiologist to read the results. Please help the doctor to point me in the right direction. Amen.
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear, even if earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Psalm 46:1-2
