#35 Helen Keller Quotes
Thursday, January 30, 2025 by Deb Vellines

UPDATE: Before talking about Helen Keller, I want to report a phone call from Be My Eyes. If this is the first time you have heard these words, check out previous blogs #23#32, and #33. I got a phone call from a man trying to read his thermostat. What temperature was it set for and what was the actual temperature? He pointed his phone at the thermostat for my answers.

This is truly an easy way to help a blind or low vision person with answers to their questions. I had to wonder what Helen Keller would think about smartphones and the Be My Eyes app to help others. Wow!

Born in 1880, Helen Keller was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She demonstrated how someone with disabilities can do so very much. What an inspiration!

My mom, Millie, loved to quote Helen Keller. Here are some of her inspiring quotes. The first one was Millie’s favorite.

  • Death is no more than passing from one room into another. But there’s a difference for me, you know. Because in that other room I shall be able to see.

  • The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.
  • Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.
  • The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart.
  • When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.
  • When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.
  • Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.
  • Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.
  • Never bend your head. Hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.
  • Be of good cheer. Do not think of today’s failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourself a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere, and you will find joy in overcoming obstacles.
  • I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do so something.
