#83 Update on Eye Injections
Wednesday, June 3, 2026 by Deb Vellines

Under Posts #18 and #19, I talk about eye injections. If you haven’t read these posts, you might want to before reading this one.

Eye injections sound painful and scary, but the eye is numbed first (with drops), so the needle doesn’t hurt. A small clip holds the eyelid open so you don’t have to worry about blinking.

The injections can be given every month or every few months, depending on your condition. As time goes on, the frequency usually decreases.

The injections work to stop abnormal blood vessel growth and reduce fluid leakage. This may prevent further vision loss. Up to 90 % of patients experience vision stabilization after the procedure.

Here are the medications:

  • Eyelea – one of the most common. It contains 2 mg of aflibercept and is usually given every 4 – 8 weeks. Eyelea HD contains 8mg and can extend the time between injections up to 4 months.
  • Vabysmo – often preferred by patients who travel frequently or find monthly visits a problem. After 1 year, 78% of Vabysmo patients were able to go for 3 or 4 months between treatments.
  • Avastin – A highly cost-effective option, making it accessible for those with high deductibles or limited coverage.
  • Lucentis – requires monthly injections.
  • Beovu – This drug is usually reserved for patients who have not responded well to other drugs. It carries a higher risk of inflammation.
  • Susvimo – a surgically implanted refillable port that continuously delivers the medication, thus reducing the need for frequent injections. The implant is refilled every 6 months. There is a higher risk of infection than with standard monthly injections.

Cost: Medicare covers the cost. If you don’t have Medicare, the treatments are widely covered by insurance.

Side effects: Side effects are rare but can include infection, retinal detachment, and increased eye pressure. You may experience a little bit of blurred vision, floaters, or soreness following an injection. These are mild and should disappear in 1 or 2 days.  If you experience a lot of discomfort after an injection, tell your doctor right away.

Readers: If you receive eye injections, we would love to hear how they helped you. Did your vision stabilize or get better? Which injection did you receive? Anything you want other patients to know?
