#82 Navigating Airports

Readers: I wish you a wonderful Easter. He is risen!!! Isn’t it wonderful to realize we will have new bodies in heaven with good vision? No more eye doctor appointments: no more fuzzy partial vision or complete blindness.
Are you thinking about an airplane ride this summer? If flying solo, do you want a few tips to help? Even if you are flying with someone. These tips can help.
- Be sure to have your cane with you. This tells everyone you might need assistance.
- Even if you have no trouble walking, get wheelchair help. You do this when booking your flight. A sighted guide can help, too, but I personally think the wheelchair is the way to go.
- Wheelchairs put you first in the security line.
- Also, the airline employee pushing the chair will take you to your gate and can check the departure board to see if your flight is on time.
- If you need to use the restroom on the way to the gate, the attendant knows where they are. Check my blog post # 36 (link) for hints on using a public restroom.
- Those in wheelchairs board the plane first. If you think you might need to use the restroom on the flight, an aisle seat will make it easier.
- When you arrive at your destination, another wheelchair will be there to take you to your connecting flight or baggage claim.
- Put something bright and distinctive, like a colorful ribbon, on your luggage so the assistant can easily identify your luggage.
- Put some tip money, with easy accessibility, in your pocket. Even though the one helping works for the airline, they will appreciate a tip.
- This has nothing to do with vision, but can really help you feel better after your flight. Knee-high compression socks will reduce the swelling that happens when you sit for a long time.
- Seeing-eye dogs can travel for free. They must sit on your lap or at your feet. In other words, they can’t block the aisle.
Readers: Do you have other tips for flying? Have you had good or bad experiences when flying?
