#79 Eat Without Spills
Friday, June 20, 2025 by Deb Vellines

Does your food end up on your lap? Do you put an empty fork into your mouth? Do you spill your water glass? Do you feel like it’s too embarrassing to eat out because of trouble getting food into your mouth? Keep in mind that even those with good vision will spill things. It happens to everybody. This blog contains 8 hints that I hope give you more confidence.
- Begin with a clock! You don’t want to take a bite and have to guess what it will be. Ask someone to tell you what is where on your plate using the numbers of a clock. Example: The mashed potatoes are at 3-6, the peas at 12, and the beef at 9.
- Speaking of peas, they are easier to eat with a spoon. They are less likely to disappear.
- When you take a bite, lean over the plate. That way if something falls, it won’t land on your lap.
- A piece of bread can be a pusher to get food on the fork. A knife can be a great pusher. Both beat using your fingers.
- Slide your hand across the table til it touches the glass instead of reaching for it through the air.
- You can ask for meat or a salad to be cut into bite-sized pieces before bringing it to the table.
- At home, if you want to tell the difference between a salt and pepper shaker, put a rubber band around one of them. Either at home or in a restaurant, pour the salt or pepper in the palm of your hand then take a pinch to put in on your food. That way you don’t get too much.
- By the way, a sandwich or a wrap is easier to eat without spills than food on a plate that needs to be picked up with a spoon or a fork.

My grandma used to sew herself beautiful adult bibs to wear so she felt pretty while she took care of spills. Is there an option to have your blogs read aloud? If the website had that option it could be helpful for your low vision viewers!Reply by: Deb Vellines
Great idea. Working on it. Thanks for your comments.Previous Posts
