#78 Challenges at a Party
Tuesday, May 27, 2025 by Deb Vellines
Let’s talk about parties and the challenges they present. Thinking about parties can raise our stress, especially when we are fighting vision loss. It’s a mix of excitement but also panic.
As much as possible, we want to prepare ahead of time. Who else is on the guest list? Is a friend going that you can arrange transportation with? If the party is someplace new to you, a friend can help orient you to the space – what is where? Like where is the bathroom?
Is food set out for folks to fill their plates? If so, you need someone to go with you to tell you what is available. It takes courage but be willing to say, “Can you help me find the food.”
Be willing to admit when you don’t recognize someone. And don’t wait. The longer you wait, the more difficult it becomes.
Some people have never met a blind person and feel awkward or unsure of what to say. They fear saying the wrong thing. How they approach a blind person often depends on what you say. You want to be included in the conversation, so speak up. Otherwise, some people will talk to the person next to you, excluding you altogether.
Most challenges have some kind of solution, but what works for one person may not work for someone else. No one solution works for everyone.
You can still do most things you want to do but you might have to learn to do it differently. Doing something in a different way requires time and patience. And courage.
